SUMMARY

OIDs are structured as paths in a tree, where the left-most number represents the root, and the right-most number represents a leaf. HL7, in its role as an ISO Registration Authority, has established an OID registry and assigns OIDs within its branch to HL7 users and vendors upon request. These OIDs are used to uniquely identify healthcare applications and services, as well as various types of identifiers.

Healthcare registries and application vendors may request details about our OID structure. This article provides a specification of our OID structure. As this article is publicly accessible, a link to this document may be shared with third parties.
